We’re going to talk about one of the latest and most convenient ways to stay connected: eSIM cards. In this guide, you’ll learn how many eSIMs you can use on your iPhone and how they can make your mobile experience easier.
For example, using two eSIMs lets you keep both a personal and a business number on the same device. Multiple eSIMs also come in handy when you travel abroad, allowing you to add a local data plan without removing your main number.
Keep in mind that if you want to add eSIMs from different carriers, your iPhone must be unlocked.
Let’s dive in!
What is an eSIM on iPhone?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital version of the traditional SIM card. It lets you access mobile services like data, calls, and SMS without needing a physical chip. Since it’s built into your device, you don’t have to worry about losing or damaging it—it’s completely virtual and secure.
Which iPhones support eSIM?
Because eSIM is relatively new, not every iPhone is compatible. Before buying or activating an eSIM, it’s important to check your device’s compatibility.
Currently, eSIM works with the following iPhone models (and newer):
- iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
- iPhone SE (2nd generation, 2020)
- iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13 series and later, including the iPhone SE (3rd generation) and iPhone 14

Can I activate multiple eSIMs on iPhone?
Yes. Depending on the model, you can store eight or more eSIMs on a single iPhone, but only two lines can be active at the same time.
Here’s how it works by model:
- 1 physical SIM + 1 eSIM: iPhone XR, XS, 11, 12, 13, SE (3rd gen), and iPhone 14
- 2 active eSIMs (no physical SIM): iPhone 13, SE (3rd gen), iPhone 14, and later
Keep in mind that not all carriers or countries support eSIM. Providers like eSIMA offer eSIM plans in over 200 destinations, including regional packages such as Southeast Asia.
How does an eSIM work on iPhone?
When you use two active lines (either 2 eSIMs or 1 physical SIM + 1 eSIM), both numbers can:
- Make and receive calls
- Send and receive SMS
- Use iMessage and FaceTime
🔹 Important: Only one line can use mobile data at a time. You can switch between them in your iPhone settings whenever needed.
